The Lyric Body: A Writing Workshop

Mondays 6 - 830pm EST
November 30th, December 7th, 14th and 21st
Virtual class

A somatic writing workshop for transformative times.

Where and how does language move through, from and towards the body? How do written texts impact and inform embodied responses? Beginning with the premise that all experiences traverse one or more bodies; singular, collective, familial, socio-political, historical, fragmented, (dis)inhabited, etc. And moving towards the body as a place of knowledge, resonance and arrival, this workshop is designed to move participants through somatic processes of writing, reading, and editing.

Together, we will investigate language as channel between bodies; we will enter the process of writing through the body, using sensory exercises, body-based listening and editing processes to return to impulse. This workshop will use somatic centering and listening practices, writing prompts, structures for somatic reading and editing, facilitated workshopping and conversation.

All poetic forms, styles and writing experiences welcome.

Sliding scale $100 - 200

The Body as Language: A Five Week Writing Class

DATES FORTHCOMING

Where and how does language move through, from and towards the body? Five weeks of poems, writing practices, somatic engagement, and conversation.

This class is designed to move participants through embodied writing practices. We will begin with the premise that all experiences traverse one or more bodies, be those singular, collective, familial, socio-political, historical, fragmented, (dis)inhabited, etc.

We will use poems, letters, writing prompts, structured forms, movement activities, and conversations towards these questions: where does language live in the body? What are the limits and extensions of that language and that body? Where and with what sounds is the body defended or ignored?

Writers and inspiration for this class will come from Maggie Nelson, Claudia Rankine, Climbing Poetree, CA Conrad, Dawn Lundy Martin, and Jordan Scott, among others. We will produce several written pieces, and share them with each other. Please come ready to write, and to let go of writing as a precious act.

$100-150 sliding scale.

The Body as Language: Somatic Poetics

June 10th 2020 - 10am to 2pm

Virtual class via Blue Stoop, Philadelphia, PA

Where and how does language move through, from and towards the body? How do written texts impact and inform embodied responses? Beginning with the premise that all experiences traverse one or more bodies; singular, collective, familial, socio-political, historical, fragmented, (dis)inhabited, etc. And moving towards the body as a place of knowledge, resonance and arrival, this one day workshop is designed to move participants through somatic processes of writing, reading, and editing.

This workshop will use somatic centering and listening practices, writing prompts, structures for somatic reading and editing, facilitated workshopping and conversation. We will move toward these questions: where does language live in the body? How do poems arrive and impact the body of their readers? What are the limits and extensions of those poetics and those bodies?

Writing and inspiration for this class will come from Maggie Nelson, Claudia Rankine, Hanif Abdurraqid, CA Conrad, Dawn Lundy Martin, and Jordan Scott, among others. Together, we will investigate language as channel between bodies; we will enter the process of writing through the body, using sensory exercises, body-based listening and editing processes to return to impulse.

Please bring 2-3 poems you are working on, and your curiosities about somatics as a process of production and poetics.
